Live Performance Video Installation

Video Bureau is a non-profit organization focused on video art. Its work consists mainly of archiving video artworks and related documents in order to build a comprehensive and explorable database for researchers, students, and collectors. They aim to provide a platform for exhibiting, organizing and archiving Video Art. 

The Bureau has added 30 art works of mine to its collection. In 2018, I presented a selection of these works in a lecture I gave as an interactive performance, where the auditorium became a gallery space. In fairytale-like language, I told many stories about my work, which provided people into my previously unknown background of some of my art works. 

“To Add One Meter to an Anonymous Mountain“

Do you know who I am? I am the video of the most well-known contemporary Chinese performance art work “To Add One Meter to an Anonymous Mountain”. I am from 1995, and it’s such a pleasure to meet you here in 2018! If it wasn’t for me, people wouldn’t know many details about this performance. Also, I provide researchers who are interested in the Beijing East Village, with important information. How proud I am!

 “The Seated Woman”, “Finger Biting” and “Red Dress”

My name is “The Seated Woman”. I was made when Yingmei was studying in Braunschweig in Germany in 1999. “Finger Biting” and “Red Dress” were also performance videos and made in the same year. 

In Yingmei’s opinion, performance video means performing in front of a camera with no audience. This is different to live performance video recording which you can see in her later performances. Before she began using performance as her main art medium, Yingmei didn’t have much courage to do live performance art, therefore she made some performance videos.

We look nothing special, but changed Yingmei’s later art career. When Marina Abramović saw us, she accepted Yingmei as her student at once, and as time went by, performance art became the most important medium for Yingmei.”

“Help!”

I am the video “Help” recorded in 2002 when Yingmei performed in Berlin. That event was curated by Marina Abramović, who invited her students to perform there. All the students began and completed their performances at the same time. 

As there were many students, but only one cameraman, there wasn’t much time to record Yingmeis performance, but Yingmei was very lucky that some of her performance was recorded. During her 3 hour performance something quite funny occurred: Yingmei, who was suspended from a 7 meter high shelf, made the audience very worried about her. This caused some misunderstanding. Do you want to know what happened? Please ask Yingmei!

“Clown”

I’m video“Clown”. One of Yingmei’s most satisfying performance video recordings. In fact, I was recorded after the live performance, in the lesson.

As Marina paid a lot attention to the recording of performances, she herself was there to help with the recording. What do you think of me? I’ve got a question: if the camera was in front of the audience, can you imagine what you would see?

“Friend”

When I was posted on the internet, people immediately fell in love with me and I became the most watched performance of Yingmei’s. 

The video was also recorded after Yingmei and Mirko Winkel finished their live performance. They had different versions but selected me in the end. I also made Yingmei think: Is it better to record during or after the performance?

“Talk to Myself”

My name is “Talk to Myself”. I’m not a live performance, just a film. In 2001, Yingmei found a job cleaning a yard for about half a year. This work inspired her to make the video “Talk to Myself”. It shows Yingmei working in a yard. She talks to herself as she sweeps fallen leaves.

I was put on her shelf for half a year after the recording was made, because Yingmei didn’t know the best way to translate Chinese.

One day Yingmei’s classmate told her that she spoke German like a school child, which inspired her to translate Chinese into English using the language of children. I’m very lucky Yingmei still loves me a lot. 

“Paradise”

I am very happy. I’m Yingmei’s live performance video “Paradise” which was made in an old castle during the first performance festival in Kiel Germany. Yingmei created a dreamlike world made of white Chinese rice paper. Inside the installation she made her live performance. 

The live performance was happened actually in a bright guest’s room in an old castle. This octagonal room had a curved ceiling. Yingmei changed the angle of the bed making it slope, and made the floor uneven like small hills with countless paper boats everywhere. Everything was covered in white. Yingmei lay on the bed dreaming in her white world. It looked like everything came from her dream.

During the performance the audience had to wait a long time to see her live performance. In fact, the live performance was more spectacular than the recording. Therefore if you have a chance, you should always see the live performance, not just see the video recording.

“Happy Yingmei”

Do you know the fairy tale The Happy Prince? In the story a statue of a golden prince becomes friends with a swallow, and they help the poor together. 

In the end, they lose their lives but they bring luck to others. 

The beautiful performance “Happy Yingmei” was inspired by this fairy tale. I am the live performance video “Happy Yingmei” and was recorded in 2012 during Yingmei’s performance at the Hayward Gallery, London. 

What you see now was only a very small part of the whole performance. Why was only part of the performance recorded? The answer is, the performance space was small, the light was dim, and the audience large. Each day the performance lasted 6-8 hours for three months. Therefore recording each day might disturb Yingmei’s interaction with the audience. This is why she decided not to record the whole performance. Yingmei also believes live performance is the key point and more important than making recordings.

Yingmei has been developing her “Object & Video Interactive Performance” method from 2016. Now at the Video Bureau Art Center you can also see her videos “Adventure” made with Andrea Isa, “The Great Sea” with Heike Ludewig, “I Wish My Beautiful Dream will Never Stop” with Maria Lentzen, and “Not Alone” with Markus Mußinghoff. In her performance art Yingmei likes to connect different art mediums, like video art.
